How Scientific Research In New York Actually Gets Funded
Federal grants, philanthropy and institutional support each come with different strings. The mix shapes what gets studied.

New York holds one of the largest concentrations of research institutions in the world. The money behind them arrives through several channels, and the differences between those channels determine what research happens.
Federal funding
The largest source of support for academic biomedical and basic research is federal, principally through agencies that award competitive, peer-reviewed grants. Investigators write proposals, panels of other scientists score them, and a fraction are funded.
Because success rates are low and proposals take months to prepare, the system rewards projects that reviewers find plausible. That is a defensible way to allocate scarce money and it does create a conservative bias, which is a standard critique from within the field rather than from outside it.
Indirect costs
Grants pay for the research and for a share of the institution's overheads — facilities, administration, compliance. The rate is negotiated between the institution and the government.
This is why a headline grant figure is not what reaches the laboratory bench, and why changes to indirect cost policy are existential questions for research universities rather than accounting details.
Philanthropy
Foundations and individual donors fund a significant share of research in New York, and they can move faster than federal agencies and take more risk. They can also concentrate on particular diseases and problems according to donor interest, which shapes the field in ways nobody planned.
Institutional and commercial support
Institutions support researchers directly, particularly early in a career and between grants. Industry funds research it expects to use, which brings its own considerations around publication rights and conflicts of interest, normally managed through disclosure requirements.
Why it matters outside the laboratory
Funding structure explains research output. Short grant cycles favor projects that produce results within them. Disease-specific philanthropy concentrates effort where advocacy is strongest.
None of that is corruption. It is the ordinary consequence of how the money is organized, and it is worth understanding before reading any claim about what science is or is not investigating.
