Julia Louis-Dreyfus opens in Jon Robin Baitz's *Other Desert Cities* at the Hudson Theatre on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Performances began on September 29, so the opening marks the production's formal debut rather than its first performance.

Louis-Dreyfus plays Polly Wyeth, a role that marks her Broadway debut. The cast also includes Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery and Lily Rabe. The limited engagement runs through January 17, 2027.

A Limited Run at the Hudson Theatre

The Hudson Theatre is at 141 West 44th Street. Playbill lists first previews on September 29, 2026, opening night on October 18 and a closing date of January 17, 2027. Those dates make a run of about sixteen weeks from the first preview to the close.

Tickets were set to go on sale in two stages. An American Express cardholder pre-sale was set to open on May 27, 2026, at 10 a.m. Eastern, and general sales were set to follow on June 3 at the same hour through the production's website.

The producers are ATG Productions, Bad Robot Live, Gavin Kalin Productions, Kristin Caskey, Bee Carrozzini and Mike Isaacson. Samuel Dallas of Envoy Theatricals is general manager, and Jim Carnahan handles casting.

Playbill gives the running time as two hours and 15 minutes, including one intermission. It also says this is the play's first Broadway revival.

Sources differ on the original production. The Boston Globe says the play premiered on Broadway in 2011, while Playbill says it opened Off-Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater that year and transferred to Broadway that same year.

Cast and creative details remain subject to change before opening night.

A Family Story Under Pressure

The play is set on Christmas Eve in the sunlit Palm Springs home of a politically connected family. A daughter arrives with a memoir that could expose secrets the family has long kept hidden, according to Broadway.com.

According to the Boston Globe, the daughter, Brooke, is a New York writer whose book is about her brother Henry, an antiwar radical who vanished after being implicated in a bombing and left a suicide note. The family is thrown into turmoil when Brooke announces the book at a family gathering on the morning before Christmas 2004.

Playbill describes the same conflict as a writer from a family with opposing political views who threatens to publish a tell-all memoir revealing a long-held family secret.

Broadway.com frames the drama around who owns a family's story and what it costs to tell it.

The Cast and Their Roles

Louis-Dreyfus plays Polly Wyeth, the matriarch of a Palm Springs, California, family in the conservative Republican establishment, according to the Boston Globe. Playbill lists Ed Harris as Lyman Wyeth, Allison Janney as Silda Grauman, Joe Keery as Trip Wyeth and Lily Rabe as Brooke Wyeth.

Louis-Dreyfus's television career, as the Boston Globe traces it, runs from Elaine Benes on NBC's *Seinfeld* through *Watching Ellie* and *The New Adventures of Old Christine* to HBO's *Veep*. On *Veep* she played Selina Meyer, a vice president who briefly becomes president.

The Globe says Louis-Dreyfus won the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series in every year from 2012 to 2019 except 2018, when *Veep* paused while she was treated for cancer. Playbill and the Globe both count 11 Emmy Awards in her career.

The role is her first Broadway credit, after a television career the Globe traces through the series above.

Joe Keery, a Newburyport native of Netflix's *Stranger Things*, makes a Broadway debut in the role of Trip, according to the Boston Globe.

Playbill identifies Allison Janney as an Oscar winner.

“The family is thrown into turmoil when Brooke announces the book at a family gathering on the morning before Christmas 2004.”

The Creative Team Behind the Revival

Jon Robin Baitz wrote the play. The Boston Globe notes that Baitz also created ABC's *Brothers & Sisters*, which ran from 2006 to 2011. Playbill reports that the play was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the Globe says Boston's SpeakEasy Stage Company presented it in 2013.

John Benjamin Hickey directs the revival, and Playbill identifies Hickey as a Tony winner. Laura Dupper is associate director. Scott Pask designed the set, with Orit Jacoby Carroll as associate scenic designer. Natasha Katz designed the lighting, Tom Broecker the costumes and Mikaal Sulaiman the sound and original music. Robert Pickens handles hair and wigs, and Richard Hodge is production stage manager.

Baitz describes Hickey as family and expresses complete trust in the director. Baitz also says the questions remain the same: how to live with who we are and what we've done and call that a life. Hickey calls the play funny, surprising and heartbreaking, a play about an American family, and describes a return to Broadway as a dream come true.

What the Debut Adds to the Fall Season

Playbill's season preview lists *Other Desert Cities* among the fall openings. Its neighbors include *Wanted*, the season's first new musical, which has previews from October 15 and opens on November 8 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. Solea Pfeiffer and Liisi LaFontaine are in the cast.

*The Fantasticks* has previews from October 22 and opens at the Hayes Theater on November 16. The revival uses a new version with a same-sex central pair and is directed by Christopher Gattelli.

*Much Ado About Nothing* transfers from the West End to the Winter Garden Theatre, with previews from October 31 and an opening on November 19. Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell star in a 10-week run.

*Inter Alia*, a new play, previews from November 10 and opens at the Music Box Theatre on December 1, with Rosamund Pike reprising a role she has played at the National Theatre and in the West End. *Galileo*, a new rock musical with Raúl Esparza reprising his Berkeley Rep role, has previews from November 10 and opens at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre on December 6.

Revivals include *Other Desert Cities* and a *Dreamgirls* revival directed by Camille A. Brown, which has been announced for Fall 2026 with dates TBA.
