How Electric Vehicle Charging Actually Works Here

Charging levels, connectors and the particular difficulty of a city where most people cannot charge at home.

Electric vehicle ownership in New York City differs from ownership elsewhere in one decisive respect: most residents have no dedicated place to park, and therefore no place to charge overnight.

The three levels

Level one charging uses an ordinary household outlet and adds range very slowly — adequate for small daily distances, inadequate for anything more.

Level two uses a higher-voltage circuit similar to a large appliance and typically replenishes a vehicle overnight. This is the standard home and workplace installation.

Direct current fast charging delivers much higher power and adds substantial range in a short stop. It is the road-trip solution and, in dense cities, frequently the default rather than the exception.

Charging speed is not constant

The rate falls as the battery fills. Charging from low to around eighty per cent is considerably faster than filling the remainder, which is why fast charging stops are usually planned to stop there.

Cold weather reduces both range and charging speed, which matters in a New York winter.

Connectors

The market has been consolidating around a smaller number of connector standards, with manufacturers announcing changes to which they support and adapters bridging the difference. Confirm what your vehicle uses and what a given network provides before relying on it.

The apartment problem

Installing a charger requires a parking space you control and permission from whoever controls the electrical supply. In a rental building or a co-op this means the landlord or the board, and the electrical capacity of the building may itself be the constraint.

Some garages offer charging, and availability varies considerably by neighbourhood. For anyone considering an electric vehicle here, this should be settled before the purchase rather than after.

Public charging

Public charging exists across the city through several networks, generally requiring an account or app. Reliability varies by network, and checking recent user reports before depending on a specific location is worthwhile.
